with reference to Sir H.Lampson's despatch No.
1941 (33/17A/1935) of the 18th September last enclosing a
memorandum from the Chinese Government on the subject of
the export of military armo to China without the
endorsement of the Chinese Goverment luchao by a Chinese
Legation, I transmit to you herewith a copy of a letter
which was eddressed to Mr.Tennyson Tan in reply to a
oimilar démarche on the part of the Chinese Legation in
London.
20 The present position as regards the export of arms
from this country to the colonies Le as follows:
Ho military armo may be exported from this country to
such destinations without an export licence, and while it
is ucual to grent licences freely for the exportation of
sporting arms, this policy is not followed in the onse of
var mcterial, and licences are not normally issued for the
exportation of war material to private consignees in the
Colonies. It hoa, however, recently been agreed that
licences may be issued, subject to the approval of the
appropriate departments of His Majesty's Government in the
United Kingdon, for the export on consignment" of masonable
quantities of arms to reputable consignees in Hong Kong ℗
