My Committee has had under consideration a copy of a
letter addressed to you on the 27th ultimo by Messrs. John
Swire & Sons on the subject of Hongkong Light Dues, and also
copies of letters recently exchanged between the General
Chamber of Commerce and the Colonial Secretary at Hongkong
on the same question.
As a result they have directed me to inform you that
they agree with, and desire to support, the views which
Messrs. John Swire & Sons have formulated, and with them to
expresss the hope that such representations may be made by you
to the Hongkong Government as will lead to sympathetic re-
consideration of the submissions made by the Hongkong General
Chamber of Commerce.
As stated in Messrs. John Swire & Sons' letter, com-
mercial conditions in the Far East are extremely difficult at
the present time and in my Committee's view everything possible
should be done to avoid increasing the burdens from which trade
is suffering.
I have the honour to be,
H. M. Under Secretary of State
for the Colonies,
Colonial Office
Sir,
Your obedient servant,
