them to be careful. That I referred to as the first incident
which had little significance to the girl at the time it
occurred.
At the same time a further converestion occurred between
the two which is of very great importance. The acused told
Zimmern that he had two men dogging Fung's footsteps and lying
in wait for hin. Zimmern asked his "How much do you pay
them"?
The accused replied "Unless they give Fung the "lotus
seed holder" (which is a slang Chinese term, I understand,
for a gun) they will get nothing". Zimmern suggested the es men
were treacherous and would not carry out their job but were
merely after accused's money. On that very night, the 19th
March, the abortive attempt to kill Fung was in fact made. A
the result of the miscarriage of that plan, so the Crown suggeste,
when he met Zimmern, the next day, the 24th March --

that Zimmern did make in connection with statements made by the
