at a later date, a Cantonese rawned Ah Kwan (number 11).
These two were engaged in turn to do the killing, and this
killing was fimlly accomplished by Fong Nam Sheung on the
evening of 24th March, after the failure of a similar plot
in the game place, under similar circumstances, five days
previously, that is to say, the nineteenth March,
Now, the evidence regarding this crime falls, I
think, into three divisions which though they overlap to
quite an extent -can yet be kept clearly defined.
Firstly, there is the evidence of motive,

will be mainly the evidence of the girl, lai ding Fai her self,
corroborated in certain material particulars by other evidence.
She also will give evidence of the actual circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased.
Secondly, there will be evidence of the accused'
deliberate desire and intention to get George Fung put out of
the way by one means or another. That will be mainly the
evidence of two Burusian witnesses, Simmern and Christie,
especially the latter.
Third comes evidence of the actual plot engineered
by the accused's own chauffeur and of its successful issue in
the murder, and of the complicity of the accused therein.
First, then, as regarde motive, The girl, lai,
will tell you that she first came to know the accused in 1928
in which year she came down from Shanghai to Hong Kong as a
menber of a theatrical troupe of which her father was lanager.
They gave performances in Hong Kong and Canton and later passed
on to the Straits Settlements.
The accused seems to have been mary much taken with
the girl from the first meeting, inagauch as very shortly
after their arrival în “inganore he followed the troupe down
there and lived in the same house as the girl and her father.
