Godown Company.

4. Mr. Anderson recommended that all that was

necessary was to dredge the approach to one berth (at

pier No. 4) to a depth of 35 feet, and the approaches to the

other berths at the other piers to a depth of 32 feet.

5. Referring to the new pier recently constructed by

the Godown Company to the north of the old piers, Mr. Anderson

was of opinion that it would have been necessary to

reconstruct some of the existing piers before long, their

average life being only about 5 years, and that it would

have been better if the new pier had been built alongside the

present most southerly pier instead of at the extreme north

of the wharves. This would have enabled the Godown Company

to have had the use of the same number of berths and to

have accommodated the large ships without difficulty during

the reconstruction period.

6. On the question of the cost of carrying out his

recommendation, Mr. Anderson pointed out that the cost

depended largely on the cost of bringing the necessary plant to Hong Kong and would probably vary between 1.20 #

# and 1.30 per cubic yard, the total cost being under 200,000 #.

7. Sir Leopold Savill stated that the Admiralty would

welcome dredging to a depth of 36 feet and added that the

Admiralty had under consideration the question of dredging

certain parts of the Harbour for their own purposes and

would consequently like to include such dredging in any

general scheme which might be adopted and to contribute

towards the cost.
