convey unofficial views to you and would again

urge that your sanction to proceed with the

scheme be granted at the earliest possible

and to forward the accompanying copy of the Hansard Report of the proceedings in the Legislative Council on the 19th May, when the motion was introduced by

Sir Henry Pollock.

In so doing, I feel it incumbent on me to

invite your attention to the feeling in the Colony generally, as it impresses me, on the subject of

the water supply.

For many years now the water supply has been subject to restriction for varying periods during the first half of each year; and in 1929 there was the extremely serious water famine which might have been repeated this year, but for the experience gained in 1929 and for the precautions since taken. Fortunately for the Colony, rain fell on the 1st June, and has continued intermittently ever since, the gain up to date

having exceeded 100,000,000 gallons.

This helps

to relieve anxiety for the future, but being less than ten days' full supply, has not justified any

reduction of the severe restrictions now in force.
