ANNEXURE.

91

Copy of letter from the Colonial Office to Imperial and International Communications, Limited.

Downing Street,

28th July, 1932.

92640/32.

Sir,

I am directed to refer to the Colonial Office

letter of the 20th instant on the subject of wireless

services in Hong Kong, and to the interview which your

representative, Mr. Corby, had at this Office with

members of the Department and the Governor of Hong Kong.

I am to inform you that a telegram has been received from the Officer Administering the Government

of Hong Kong, representing that it is impossible to

allow any further extension of the period of

2.

inactivity which has lasted in effect for three years.

He states that it is imperative to proceed with overdue

improvements in the service by introduction of

equipment and regularising and recruiting establishment.

He represents that the interests of Hong Kong are being

prejudiced by the long delay in arriving at a

settlement and therefore proposes that negotiations

with your Company should be broken off, and that the

Colony should proceea to develop its own service with

China in the interests of local trade, which would be

prejudiced materially by further delay, and also to

develop communications with the neighbouring Eastern

countries which are almost of equal urgency and

importance.

3.

As your Directors are aware, it has always been the desire of the Government to abstain from

THE GENERAL MANAGER,

IMPERIAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS LIMITED.
