Hon. D. P. W.

Enclosure No. 1.

27

Development of Sites of Government House and

Government Offices.

The following is a brief report on the scope of the Scheme

and the method by which it is proposed to execute it.

The area involved comprises approximately the whole of the

Crown land contained within the following boundaries Garden Road,

Queens Road, Ice House Street and Upper Albert Road together with

the following privately owned land within the same boundaries -

I.L. 580 (owned by the H.K. & S.Bank) and I.L. 564 (situated in Ice

House Street).

The sale of the old City Hall site is also included.

The removal of a number of existing Government buildings

and the erection of new ones on other sites is necessary. Those to

be removed are Government House, all Government Offices within the

area (the Colonial Secretariat and Public Works Department), the

Volunteer Headquarters and Beaconsfield Arcade. The new ones to be

built are A new Government House on the old Militery Sanitorium

Site near Magazine Gap, New Government Offices in a position to

accord with the new lay-out and a new Volunteer Headquarters on a

site to be decided upon later. The new Government Offices will be

sufficiently large to provide accommodation for the Colonial

Secretariat and Public Works Department with, it is hoped,

sufficient space to provide for another Government Department in

addition. Such of the existing City Hall accommodation as it is

necessary to reprovision will also be contained within this building.

Temporary accommodation for the Colonial Secretariat and Public Works

Department must be found from the time when it becomes necessary to

demolish their existing offices until the new Government Offices are

built and it is proposed to overcome this difficulty in the

following manner a portion of Section A (the first to be developed) will be reserved temporarily for Government and on it will be erected a new building which will ultimately be sold with

This building will be pań planned with the land on which it stands. few internal walls and large open floors which can be adapted to their temporary purpose by the erection of light partitions.
