Whitehall, S.Kl.

10th August, 1932.

My dear Hornell,

Many thanks for sending me the report on Chinese

Studies, with your letter of the 23rd June. I imagine

that it ought not to be put before the Advisory Committee

on Education in the Colonies until it has been before the

Senate, Council and Court. ke shell be glad to hear what

action is ultimately agreed on by the University.

As regards the selection of a Chinese keader, will you

kindly refer to the letter of the Secretary of State for the

Colonies to the Governor of Hong Kong, dated 5. 1. 32, in

which he suggests that Hong Kong University should recruit

through the Universities Bureau for any future vacancies on

its staff?

The Governor, in his reply of 22. 3. 32, stated

that this suggestion had been accepted by the University,

which would henceforth communicate direct with the Universities

Bureau regarding all future vacancies on its staff.

these circumstances I do not think that it would be wise for

me to enterin to the business, and the authorities concerned

in the Colonial Office agree.

Sir William Hornell, C.I.E.

Yours sincerely,

In

Sd.) ARTHUR MAYHEW
