Dear Mayhew,
I have to thank you for your letter of the 10th August,
1932, acknowledging receipt of the Report on Chinese Studies. I
agree that it would be better not to put the report before the
Advisory Committee on Education for the Colonies, until it has been
before the Senate, Council and Court of the University and the
University has decided on its policy.
As a matter of fact the income of the University has been
diminished by £1900 a year owing to the conversion of the 5% War
Loan. This may make it necessary for us to postpone the appointment
of a Reader in Chinese. The man we want is apparently very difficult
to find.
You were quite right in supposing that the University has
decided to refer most of its vacancies which are recruited in
England to the Universities Bureau. My object in writing to you
