Finally, the host plants involved are probably various, but little is on record. B. japonica is said by Makino to be parasitic on roots of various species of the Styracaceous genus, Symplocos. B. tobiracola is said by Makino to be parasitic on the roots of Pittosporum Tobira Ait. Mooker indicates roots of Acer and of Quercus as hosts of B. involucrata and its varieties. Of It is to be the hosts of the other species nothing definite seems known. hoped that in the Hong Kong region the matter of restriction or variety of hosts may be more carefully investigated.
PLATES.
The plates show the variation of habit and the colour varies from light tan to light pink. Some plants colour the alcohol in which they are preserved a light coral red.
Plate shows 5 plants of collection 1 (Tai Mo Shan). The smallest specimen (pistillate) is in great contrast to the two other pistillate specimens (one on either side) and the capitula of these outer specimens show somewhat the variation of shape used to distinguish species. The two inner staminate specimens are also in contrast as to stoutness.
Plate 2 shows fasciculate specimens of different ages, also from collection 1. The centre specimen is staminate. The upper specimen shows several very young tubercles.
Plate 3, from collection 2 (Wong Nei Chung Valley on Hong Kong Island) shows a fasciculate clump of staminate inflorescences from a much branched rhizome. This specimen was pink and stained the pre- serving alcohol a decidedly coral red colour,
Plate shows 5 plants from collection 3 (Ma On Shan). The con- trast in stoutness is decided. The central figure shows the fashion in which
