6. Hong Kong.
Memoranda regarding Chinese Teaching in Hong Kong
University had been circulated (A.C.3.0. 1/33).
Lord Lugard and Sir James Currie mentioned the Report by Professor Forster on his visit to the Universities
in China. There seemed to be a complete domination by
American ideas and standards in all the Universities and it
was much to be regretted that the influence of British
ideas and standards could not be extended.
Professor Coupland said, in reply to a question,
that there were few Chinese students at Oxford University.
He referred to the work of the Universities China Committee,
of which the Master of Balliol (Dr.A.D. Lindsay) was
Chairman.
Lord Lugard said that a hostel in London for the
use of Chinese students, called China House, was being
established.
Mr. Pickthorn said that there were a certain
number of Chinese students at Cambridge University. There
was a strong tendency for Chinese students to go to
American Universities rather than to British because the
former were less expensive and the standards were lower.
Moreover the cost of passages was less.
The Committee noted with satisfaction the
suggestions and recommendations contained in the Memoranda
circulated. It was agreed that copies of Professor
Forster's Report referred to should be circulated to
members.
