KONININKOVnununun HONG KONG UNIVERSITY RAMENCOMEN examinations. Dr. H. G. Earle who was the University's Professor of Physiology from 1915 to 1928 is now the Director of the Henry Lester Medical Research Institute in Shanghai.

In 1912 there were 21 students in the Medical Faculty; in 1016 there were 65; in 1929 there were 88. There are now 154 students in the Faculty--140 men and 14 women. The University medical course which extends over six years leads to the combined degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B., B.S.). This combined degree has been conferred on 198 graduates-11 of them being women. The University also confers the higher degrees of Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) and Master of Surgery (M.S.). The degree of M.D. has been awarded to 7 graduates; there is only one Master of Surgery.

The staff of the faculty now consists of whole-time professors in surgery, pathology, anatomy, medicine, obstetrics & gynaecology, and physiology. The professors of chemistry and physics and the lecturers in these two branches work in the faculty as does also the reader in biology. There are eight full-time assistants to professors and one whole-time demonstrator. There are part-time lecturers in opthalmology, tropical medicine, therapeutics, radiology, venereal diseases, a part-time tutor and a part-time demonstrator in anatomy and a part- time demonstrator in materia medica and pharmacy. The part-time lecturer in tropical medicine (a Government medical officer) acts as anaesthetist to the surgical clinic and teacher of vaccination.

There is a University Medical Society and it publishes a periodical entitled Caduceus." In this, a number of useful papers have been published. l'apers have also appeared in other medical and scientific journals. A list of some of these papers appears in an appendix.

The Professor of Physiology, accompanied by the Professor of Physics, has twice visited Borneo to investigate the rural distribution of blood groups in that part of the world.

A joint conference of the China Missionary Medical Association and the British Medical Association was held in the University in January 1923.

The inaugural ceremony took the form of a special Congregation which was held in the City Hall. Honorary Doctorates were conferred on Drs. Houghton, Hune, Cousland, and Muir. Eight sections of the Conference were presided over by members of the University staff. The staff also contributed twenty papers.

The Faculty of Medicine has many needs. It would scarcely be otherwise, for neither the science of medicine nor the art of healing is standing still. The department of anatomy is required to give special courses in histology, embryo- logy, neurology, and general anatomy, but there is no department either of embryology or of histology. There is no separate building for the department of surgery and the fact that the departinent of gross anatomy has to find room for operative surgery is prejudicing the development of both these branches. separate school of surgery is an urgent need. Then the facilities for teaching preventive medicine and hygiene are quite inadequate. This is a defect to which the University must pay early attention. The modern doctor should live up to the adage Prevention is better than cure." The public health worker is already in demand in China and the demand is growing. What a chance for some rich man to establish and endow a Manson Institute of Public Health!
