Chinese eligible for the sub-committee are Y.T.Tsur, T.Z.Koo, Dr Chiang Monlin (the distinguished and greatly-respected head of Nankai University, Tientsin) and Professor Mi Wu of Tsing Hua University. The last-named is a prominent leader of a more conservative school of thought than most of the other persons named, and might not care to associate himself with a BERANDALELNION. group of "radicals", especially as he is an upholder of the old Chinese cultural traditions and is not in sympathy with the "literary reform" movement.
he would be a valuable member of the sub-committee if he could
be induced to serve. He is a great admirer of English litera-
ture and has translated (inter alia) one of Thackeray's novels.
He spent some months in London last year, but his student-life abroad was spent in America. Among British residents in Pei-
ping who might with advantage be invited to join the sub-commit-
tee are Mr A.H. George (Commercial Secretary at the British Lega-
tion) and Professor Bevan.
There is not likely to be much difficulty in se-
curing the services of suitable correspondents in the different
educational centres. In the Shanghai district, Dr Sydney K.Wei,
of the Ministry of Education, who has shown great interest in
the whole scheme, might be willing to act in this capacity, and
the names of Z.C.Chen (formerly a student at the Royal School of
Lines) and Dr Hsing-lo Hsu (a prominent banker) have been fre-
quently brought forward. Mr E.G.Hubbard of the Hong Kong and
Shanghai Banking Corporation in Shanghai would be willing to help, and the name of Dr Chatley (well known in connection with the
activities of the Nobth China Branch of the Royal Asiatic
Society) has also been suggested. In Shanghai there is an
Association of British Returned-Students who have already shown
considerable interest in our work, and it is suggested that they
might be invited to elect a representative on the sub-committee.
Some of the members of the association are frequent visitors to
Peiping and would probably be able to attend meetings there.
