if I describe briefly the organisation which I have

established and the work which it has achieved up to the

present time.

Very briefly the following is the line upon which I

have been working:-

In order that Hong Kong University may be an author-

itative centre of information on the Biological Sciences,

it must acquire knowledge of local natural phenomena, much

of which is at present non existent or unco-ordinated.

therefore set about building up an organisation of interested

persons, many of whom are whole time paid workers, whom I

have trained as collectors, and who collect large quantities

of fauna and flora. This material is sent away to scientific

specialists in Universities and institutions throughout the

world for classification and study. These authorities not

only return named specimens but also write up the data in the

form of articles, the best and most satisfactory of which are

published in the "Hong Kong Naturalist", a publication which

I founded 3 years ago and which I edit. In this way articles

by first class scientists on the fauna and flora of Hong Kong

are made available to scientific students in the Far East.

300 Copies of the Naturalist are sold and many more are

presented to other Universities in exchange for their

publications.

The papers received in these exchanges are

bound and already form a considerable and increasing library
