that the apparatus in the Department is gradually being brought more up to date and also to the fact that the hours of instruction during the third year have been increased by 41⁄2 hours per week in Physiology and by extending the Pharmacological instruction throughout both University terms and not, as previously, con- fining it merely to the Autumn Term

The performance of work such as this cannot be undertaken without a certain amount of expenditure, and it might not be amiss to place on record here the fact that the University has no funds with which they might encourage original work, and all the cost of investigation such as this has to be met out of the private pocket of the Professors concerned.

During the year a recommendation was made that some of the Boxer money should be spent in providing Demonstrators in the Department; this is a most urgent need and is essential not only because it is extremely difficult to give satisfactory attention to students in a practical class of 20, but it is also important that those who are intending to do higher work in Medicine should have had at least 12 months experience in teaching Physiology. It is to be hoped that these posts will be made available and filled by some of our graduates in the very near future.

BIOLOGICAL SURVEY OF HONG KONG.-During the year some thousands of specimens have been collected and sent throughout the world to experts for determination and description. Articles have been published in the "Hong Kong Naturalist" and others will follow describing these collections. Collections comprise in particular, Beetles (P.I.); Crabs (Pekin); Echinoderms (Copen- hagen); Fishes (Philadelphia); Lizards (London); Mosses (Leeds); Seaweeds (Berkeley); Shells (Pekin); Snakes (London); Spiders (Southamption); etc. Concentration has been maintained on systematic work during the past 2 years but now that this is progressing steadily the Head of the Department hopes to be able to turn his attention to Ecology and Bionomics in the next year

or two.
