Dr.Herklots called to see me on the
20th July. Mr.Mayhew was present during the
first part of the convercsation.
It was
made clear to Dr. Herklots (though he already
fully appreciated the position) that it would be
idle for him to hope for financial assistance
from Government sources. It was suggested to
him that he might be well advised in the first
instance to bring his requirements to the notice
of the Universities China Committee (Chairman:-
Dr. Lindsay, Master of Balliol) which has at its
disposal for educational purposes certain funds
derived from the Boxer Indemnity. Dr.Herklots said
that it had already been his intention to send
his memo. (copy below) to the Decretary to this
Committee.
