Joseph Bernard Newill

X

Accused.

Sworn.

I am the Deputy Harbour Master, Hong Kong. On Sunday

26th July 1931 I was on board the yacht Tavy II in a position approximately 270° 1.5 miles from the

southern extremity of Lantau Island proceeding under

sail. Course about NNW wind aft force 4 to 5 and

weather clear.

The Sui Tai had been observed approaching for a

considerable time on a course about Wós. When about

a mile away she appeared to make a slight alteration

of course to Starboard to pass anead of me.

At

about 11.10 nours the two vessels were about 30 yards

apart and it then became necessary to put the melm

of Tavy II nard astarboard in order to avoid a

collision. The Sui Tai passed about 20 yards away from

tne Tavy II. No sound signal was made by the Sui

Tai. The accused is the Master of the Sui Tai.

(sd). G. F. Hole,

Marine Magistrate,

29. 7. 31.

I did not haul up to the wind sooner because it is

not the duty of a sailing ship to give way to a

steamer.
