Such depreciation has occasioned considerable loss to officers of this Government who are drawing pensions, or salary whilst on leave, in Australia, and certain of the officers affected have inquired whether they may receive compensation for such losses. I would invite Your Lordship's attention to the fact that, under existing conditions, the benefit of the falling exchange accrues to the Australian Government and as an instance I attach the receipt of Mr. S. Kelly, Sanitary Inspector, for £52. 19s. 7d. draw in Sydney in Australian currency, together with the corresponding receipt of the Official Secretary of the Commonwealth of Australia for £52. 19s. 7d. paid by the Crown Agents for the Colonies in sterling in London,

I would request Your Lordship to cause
representations to be made to the Australian Government with a view to making arrangements whereby officers of the Hong Kong Government may be secured against loss occasioned by the depreciation of Australian currency.
