In view of the representations made by the French
Ambassador, as reported in my letter No. W 8677/300/17
of the 28th ultimo, he considers that it would be
embarrassing to have to explain to the French Government that of the various alternatives available His Majesty's
Government had selected the one least calculated to meet
their wishes.
