on being promoted to 1st Class and gain only $12 in salary, On the latter hypothesis the samo men could loso a bonus of $19 on attaining a final incremont of $12. The same applies to the adoption as tho dividing line of a salary scale with a given maximum. Thus if the bonus were made payable only to those employees whoso maxima are loss than $300, two office attendants in the Socretariat for Chinese Affairs would get no bonus at any stage of their service while the other two would get a bonus at all stages. If on the other hand the $300 maximum is admitted to the bonus all 2nd Class Chinese constables (and no other polico) become eligible for the bonus.

After careful consideration wo are of the opinion that the most satisfactory solution will be found in tho adoption of a tapered scale of bonuscs as follows :-

Salaries up to $240 p.a. inclusive

a month's pay

Salaries from $241 to $252

ŵ

17 $253 to $264

That is, up to $20 per month, the employee will get increased bonus with each rise in pay. Above that point his bonus decreases by $4 per stago: but as the rise in pay por stage will rarely be less than $12 the employee will still gain by his advancement.
