It is difficult to day what will be the ultimate
effect on unit costs of the depreciation in the value of the
dollar, and although there has not so far been any serious
increase, it seems certain that costs must rise if there is
no appreciable recovery in its value.
Although their construction will not be necessary
for many years, and the cost of work may be quite different
from that of today, we might perhaps mention that on today's
rates, the total cost of the catchwaters and tunnel would be
about $3,500,000.
Apart from the headworks, with which we have dealt
in preceding paragraphs, and beyond which no further works
will be required fully to develop the gravitation supply,
duplication of trunk mains, including the Harbour Pipe,
additional filters and service reservoirs will be required
to keep pace with increasing draught from the Shing Mun
Reservoir, and these have been included in Mr. Henderson's
report covering the works of subsequent instalments.
We may now summarise briefly the essential features
of this report.
