of European and American business methods, there has been a

tendency for business to pass into the hands of purely

Chinese concerns.

Among the indications of the wealth of the Colony

perhaps one of the most striking is that during the five days

racing at the Spring Meeting of the Hong Kong Jockey Club

the amount staked by members of the public on the Totalisator and Cash Sweepstakes exceeded $2,700,000.

It is also worthy of note that the Jockey Club,

having recently spent many lakhs on the erection of stands, has now embarked on an expenditure of $1,000,000 for new

stabling.

An indication of public confidence in the

prosperity of the Colony is afforded by the results of recent

sales of Crown Lands.

During the six months ending the 31st March, 1931, fifty six Lots have been put up for sale by public auction, at an aggregate upset price of $1,006,046.

Every lot was sold and the total price realized

was $1,486,112.

The number of private sales approximates that

reached during the boom years, 1923 and 1924.

The recently published reports of public companies show large profits, the figures for previous years being in most cases maintained and in many cases exceeded, while in

three cases the Directors' fees were increased.

A table showing these profits is annexed.

It is respectfully submitted that the foregoing facts are concrete evidence of the prosperity of the Colony.

It has been of particular interest to the sterling

salary members of the Civil Service who have suffered

reduction of their emoluments by the recent alteration in the
