course would be to object and, if necessary, make our

objection effective by the usual means and through the

usual channels. As regards the Kuala Lumpur appointment

it was agreed that as our agreement to the appointment had

already been notified to the Chinese Government, we could

not now, in any case, impose conditions precedent; when,

however, a name is proposed by the Chinese enquiries will

be made through Sir Miles Lampson and Sir C. Clementi

whether there is any objection to the appointment of the

individual in question.

As regards the question of reciprocity and the proposal

that in the case of transient visitors for periods not

exceeding six months Chinese Consuls should be entitled

to afford protection in Malaya to persons of dual Chinese
