Police supervisiɔn!
excerised
In addition to the supervisiɔn supervised by the S.C.A. the brothels in the East End that is those which are visited by foreigners only ( principally members of the Army, Navy or Air Force) come under the control of a special branch of the Police Department.
A certian firm of private practitioners has for many years had a practice among this vlass and maintains a hospital in the brothel area for treatment of venerezl cases. All the prostitutes in this category attend the clinic once a week for examination.
For the convenience of the Police and the Services each house has a book comtianing full particulars of each prost- itute in residence, one page for each individual. Each woman keeps a small book in which each client is supposed to write his name and address and the time of visit.
On a certain day in each month the Mistress of the hous house attends at the hospital with her women and the book con- taining particulars. When the doctor finds a woman infected he detaches the a patients page from the house book and retains it
until he is able to declare her free from infection. Without her page the prostitute cannot continue to reside in the regis- tered house and cannot continue her practice. She has the alternative of entering hospital or of leaving theChlony. Almost always she elects to enter the hospital and remain there until discharged. When discharged cured her page is returned to the bɔɔk and she can resume practice.

The small book held by the prostitute is chiefly of of value in checking the movement of soldiers sailors or air- men When one of these reports himself infected he is asked where he contracted the disease. If he says he contracred it in a certain brothel. the "edical Officer in forms the Police Inspect- or who takes the patient to the brothel and confronts him with the girl whom he has a accused. The girls book is examined and if the entry corresponds with the statement of the patient arrangements are made for her to attend the clinic and be exam- ined by the rivate Practitioner. As the authorities have power to put any house out of bounds for soldiers or sailors the prostitute never refuses examination.
