With reference to ir William Peel's despatch confidential (3) of the 15th January, 1932, onthe subject of prostitution in Hong Kong, I have the honour to inform you that all Chinese and Japanese brothels which catered for European custom have now been closed. The keepers

have been warned by the Secretary for Chinese Affairs that re-opening in any form will not be tolerated.

The inmates of these brothels have been

interviewed separately by an assistant to the Secretary for Chinese Affairs or by the lady inspectors of muitsai attached to the department and offers of assistance were made to each one. In each case the offer was declined; moat of the women announced the ir intention of proceeding to Canton or Macao to continue their profession. The number ao interviewed was 197.

3. It is as yet too early to make any report on the effect of the closure on conditions in the Colony.
