GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONG KONG, 19th August, 1931.
82842/31
My Lord,
With reference to Your Lordship's despatch No.158
of 3rd June, 1931, transmitting copies of questions in
Parliament on the subject of the inspection of mui-tsai by
charitable societies receiving financial support from this
Government, I have the honour to inform you that there are at
present six charitable institutions which receive financial
support, whilst it is proposed to give a certain amount of
support to the Po Leung Kuk in 1932. This institution has
hitherto been financially independent.
2. Of these bodies receiving financial support, one is, by its constitution, essentially an investigating society. I refer to the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children, inaugurated a little over 18 months ago. This Society employs two lady Chinese inspectors, who work in the closest possible co-operation with the Government. As regards mui-t sai in particular, the Society has promised to devote special
attention to inquiring into the welfare of mui-t sai and
suspected mui-tsai. Towards the attainment of this object
the Society's inspectors are given every help by the Secretariat for Chinese Affairs, which will provide any details required to aid investigation.
