meeting, which were sent to you on the 4th March.
As the question of finance came up incidentally during
the discusion, Sir Michael Sadler undertook to do what he
could unofficially in order to interest his Chinese friends in
Hong Kong in the question. Since then he has been in touch
with the Far East Department, but it is understood that he is
not acting in any way on behalf of or as & representative of
the Advisory Committee.
The question of financial support to
Hong Kong University has not yet been referred to the Advisory
Committee, and I have received from the Far East Department
no indication that such a reference is probable. I venture
to suggest that your best plan, if you are anxious to get
guidance or suggestions relating to your work on the China Uni-
versity Committee, would be to get into direct touch with the
Far East Department, since, as Joint Secretary of the Advisory
Committee, I have no authority to give advice in this matter.
I am showing that Department this correspondence, so that they
will know how the matter stands.
Yours sincerely,
(Signed) ARTHUR MAYHEW
The Rt. Hon.
The Lord Lugard, P.C., G.C.M.G., C.B., D.S.O.
