Sir,

On the 15th June, 1931, "The Hongkong Telegraph",

an evening newspaper published by the South China Morning

Post Company, Limited, under British direction, celebrates

the 50th anniversary of its establishment, and this letter is

written in the hope that we may be able to secure, for publica-

tion in a proposed Special Jubilee Number, a brief message

of congratulation from His Most Gracious Majesty the King,

of whom so many residents of this Crown Colony are loyal

subjects.

During the fifty years of its existence, "The

Hongkong Telegraph" has consistently striven to uphold British

interests and ideals not only in HongKong but throughout the

extensive area in South China in which it circulates. It

has also been a sincere advocate of the cultivation of Anglo-

Chinese friendship, in the belief that closer contact must be

to the mutual benefit of both nations.

His Majesty may also be interested to learn that

during the Great War, "The Hongkong Telegraph" was particularly

concerned in keeping the cause of the Allies to the fore amongst

his Chinese subjects in this Colony, who number almost a million;

that it was able to help in directing the claims of numerous

War Funds to the sympathy of its readers; and that during the
