HONGKONG.
9-monthly periods only-1922, 1923, 1924 and 1930.
German imports have increased from £51,000 in 1922 to £203,000 in 1930. Germany's chief competition against us is in light-weight serges, imperials, and to some extent in cloths of the melton type.
French imports have increased from £6,000 in 1922 to £57,000 in 1930. Her gains are in light-weight serges, that is, from nil in 1924 to 115,000 yards in 1930, and more striking, in suitings and tweeds of which she sent to Hongkong in nine months of 1930, $655,759. In this latter year she secured more business than Britain, who had $536,409.
·
Italy has increased from nil in 1922 to £111,000 in nine months of 1930. Her chief lines are meltons in which in 1930 she secured over two-thirds of the trade, and in heavy woollens and overcoatings in which in 1930 she obtained about seven-eighths of the trade.
Japan's trade is still small. £11,372 in 1930 mostly in wool and cotton unions, which account for nearly half of her trade with Hongkorg.
