DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY-REPORT FOR 1930. Staff:-L. T. Ride, M.A., M.B., B.ch. (Oxon.), M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., (Professor of Physiology, late Demonstrator of Physiology and Demonstrator of Pharmacology Guy's Hospital, London).

S. Y. Wong, M.Sc., Ph.D., (Assistant to the Professor of

Physiology, and Lecturer in Pharmacology).

The Department provides instruction in Physiology and Pharmacology for students in the Second and Third years of their medical course, Junior Physiology including Biochemistry, Biophysics and Experimental Physiology being taught to second year, and Senior Physiology including Clinical Physiology and Pharmacology in the third year.

The numbers in the Senior class were 25 in the Spring Term and 22 in the Autumn Term, and those of the Junior class were 21 in the Spring Term and 21 in the Autumn Term, while 43 took Pharmacology.

The results of the Degree Eaminations were about the aver- age; 9 passing the 3rd Degree Examination in Physiology in May and 10 in December, and 5 passing the 2nd Degree Examination in Physiology in May and 9 in December. 12 passed the 3rd Degree Examination in Pharmacology in May and 21 passed in December.

Although we still lack facilities for mammalian experimental work, the apparatus in the Department is gradually being in- creased, and it is hoped that before long a course in mammalian physiology may be given to the senior students.

Throughout the long vacation many of the students of the 3rd year attended regularly and assisted in original work which was being done in the department on gastric secretion, and in

this way not only was their interest maintained during the vacation but a considerable amount of extra tuition was able to be given. This opportunity may be taken to thank the students for their assistance which was of no mean order.

Investigations on Gastric Digestion and on Blood Grouping have been continued throughout the year and the following papers have been published :—

Fractional Test Meal Analysis" by L. T. Ride and S. Y. Wong "The Caduceus " Vol. 9, No. 4, p.

"Apparatus for Determining Blood Groups for use both in the Laboratory and the Field" by L. T. Ride. Read before the 8th Congress of the Far Eastern Asso- tion of Tropical Medicine held in Bangkok, December, 1930. "The Hydrolytic theory of Hydrochloric Acid Secretion in its Clinical Aspect " by L. T. Ride.

DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY-REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1930.

Staff:-J L. Shellshear, D.s.o., M.D., ch.м. (Professor of Anatomy). R. J. Wong, M.B., ch.M. (Tutor in Anatomy).

E. W. Kirk, M.D., Ch.B., F.R.C.S.E. (Demonstrator in

Anatomy).

Teaching:-

The work of the Department of Anatomy comprises the teaching of medical students in the second and third years of the medical curriculum. Special courses are given in Histology, Embryology, Neurology and General Anatomy.

There is strictly speaking no Department of Embryology and Histology. The teaching is only made possible by the use of a collection of microscope slides brought out from England in 1922. Many of these slides are showing signs of wear and tear and teaching is carried out under considerable difficulty.
