Another matter which I think might appropriately be taken in
hand by the Universities China Committee in association with the
China Society, is the provision of a Hostal or Club for Chinese
Students in London, They are as a rule quiet law-abiding youths
give little trouble, but they (like Indians and African) resent
being put under control and regulations. A Club with a few bedrooms
available for new arrivals, or short periods, but not for permanent
residence would probably be the best. Er.Silcock thinks the China
Committ e might have its oʻfices in the same building and this would
reduce the cost. lis estimates the capital cost at 26,000, as a
minimum.
There are, he says, about 500 Chinese students of all types in England,
The Chinese are (he says) anxious for such a Club, at present they
meet in two or three restaurants in London, They think they might
themsalves raise £2,000, and he thinks British firms and others
could put up another £2,000,leaving only £2,000 for the Committee's
funds. The China Society would I think undertake to organise and run
the scheme.
