By His Excellency's Command,

Dated the 31st day of August, 1931.

It is requested that a further Supplementary Vote for $250 be approved to pay rent (at $125 per month each flat) for two Flats on Morrison Hill Road for the month of December, 1931.

44.-32, Kowloon-Canton Railway :-Special Expenditure.-Derail- ment at Mile 93 and washout to Railway embankment South of Shatin

Owing to a very heavy rainstorm on April, 20th, a washout to Railway embankment occurred South of Shatin, and at Mile 9 a portion of the embankment was undermined and a local passenger train derailed causing serious damage to Railway stock. At other points on the Railway minor damage occurred. The cost of repairs is estimated as follows:-

Labour in connection with clearing wrecked Locomo-

tive and Coaches

Estimates, 1931.

41.-33, Defence, A.-Volunteer Defence Corps :-1, Personal Emolu- ments. Difference of Salary for one Storeman.

Provision made in Estimates (page 107, sub-head 1)..... S 32,100

The work of storeman was up to May 18th done by a Regular soldier to whom an allowance of $365 per annum was granted. The War Office have now ruled that the employment of a Regular soldier as full time storeman to the Local Defence Force cannot be approved and the man has consequently been withdrawn. His place has been filled by the appoint- ment of a storeman on a salary of $550 per annum.

The sum now required represents the difference between the two rates of pay for the period May 19th to December 31st viz. $115. (C.S.O. 59 in 3009/22).

* 42. 25, Medical Department:-55, Microscope for Bacteriological Institute

Provision made in Estimates (page 55 sub-head 56) ...$ 750 Owing to the difference between the exchange rate at the time of

pre- paring the estimate and the present exchange rate, the provision made in Estimates is now found to be insufficient. A further sum of $50 is required. The microscope cost £37.0.5 @ 11 3/16 $794.19 the balance being for local landing charges.

The above is to be met from savings under Anti Rabic Work (1931 Estimates page 55 sub-head 30). (C.S.Ö. 27 in 220/30).
