The Tai O Station Water Boat, built in 1927 became unserviceable early this year. An old confiscated sampan was sent out in its place, and that has now become unserviceable.
The estimated cost of a new boat required for that Station is $375 for which application is now submitted.
The above is to be met from savings under Repairs, minor improve- ments and stores for launches and boats (1931 Estimates page 28 sub- head 12).

Wages of car drivers paid from this vote were raised in 1930 but pro- vision for the excess, and for the wages of one additional driver engaged in 1930 was omitted in error from the estimates for 1931 leaving a deficit on the vote of $1,210.
The balance $1,200 is required to cover additional cost of tyres and petrol due to the fall in exchange.

The above sum is required to complete the reimbursement due to the Railway in 1931 in respect of the difference between the actual value of tickets issued for school children and the amount paid by school children. Such tickets are issued at reduced fares and the difference is debited to the Education Department vote and credited to Railway Revenue, the transaction being a book entry.
The above is to be met from savings under University Examination Fees (1931 Estimates page 71 sub-head 12).

Approval is requested of the payment of a gratuity equivalent to one year's salary less pension already drawn to the widow of the late Wan Kiu, Headman, Kowloon-Canton Railway, who died on 28th September, 1931, 8 months after retiring on pension.
The above sub-head in the Estimates is usually taken only to cover gratuities when death occurs during the actual service of an officer.
The Finance Committee has already expressed its approval of this payment.
