We are in receipt of your letter 72924/30 of
December 23rd.
We do not consider the fall in the value of the
dollar a sufficient reason for increasing the charges
to shipping using the port, seeing that a great pro- portion of the running expenses of the Colony are in silver. Be that as it may however, the fall in the value of the dollar hits companies like those, which we manage or are agents for, in every way. It in- creases all their running expenses, it reduces, if not extinguishes, any profit left and its effect on the trade of China as a whole has been very serious. The present therefore seems to be hardly a suitable time to increase the burdens, which British shipping
in the Far East has to bear.
