Indian married quarters. Mrs. Madgwick opened the pantry

door, apparently to see what was happening. The Chinese

servant waved to her to withdraw. She immediately did so,

and went into the back sitting room, between which and

the verandah where Indian Police Constable B. 543 Dalip

Singh was standing, there is a bathroom. Almost

immediately after Mrs. Madgwick had withdrawn into the

sitting room, the Chinese man-servant heard three shots

fired in rapid succession. Indian Police Constable B.543

Dalip Singh had fired these three shots (actually he fired

five in all) from the bathroom through the door communi-

cating with the back sitting room. Mrs. Madgwick must

have been standing close to this door. One or more shots

had pierced her skull and killed her instantaneously.

Her death must have taken place within the first five or

ten minutes after Indian Police Constable B. 543 Dalip Singh

had begun to run amok.

The Indian Lance-Sergeant (I.L.S. B. 349 Jewan

Singh), and the other three Indian Constables in the

Station, armed themselves with their rifles and ball

ammunition and retreated to the larger of the two Indian

barrack rooms. The Chinese Interpreter and the servants

had rushed to shelter in their own quarters at the first

shots. The Indian Lance-Sergeant failed entirely at this

critical time. He and the Constables remained locked in

their barrack room and contented themselves with firing at

random through the room windows when they heard Indian

Police Constable B. 543 Dalip Singh firing on the first

floor above them. Meanwhile, B. 543 Dalip Singh decended

the stairs to the Charge Room and removed the Lewis gun

and ammunition to the first floor. Fortunately, the

Lewis gun jammed, and he was unable to use it. He then

lowered the iron grille which closes approach from the

first floor to the inside of the Station. Owing to its
