now being made, I must point out that running amok,

though fortunately rare in Hong Kong, may take place

anywhere despite any precautions and when it does

serious injury if not loss of life must result.

I do not therefore consider that the

facts of this case justify the adoption of this

recommendation.

For similar reasons this incident does

not form any ground for altering the practice of sending married European officers to take charge of outlying

stations. I have, however, given the matter my careful

consideration but find that the supply of married

European quarters will not permit of the exclusion of

the New Territories stations from the list. There is

moreover a good deal to be said for the married state

as a mitigation of the loneliness of these stations:

and the practice of sending married men to the New

Territories stations has obtained without objection

from days when communications and general conditions

were much less easy and pleasant than they now are.
