reclamation and the reconstruction of the two piers referred

to above and the improvement of the Queen Victoria Street pier

to make them safe and suitable for a continuation of the

present Ferry System is estimated at $550,000. This work is

now extremely urgent and must be put in hand at once even if

the vehicles ferry berth is not substituted for it. The cost of the additional construction necessary to provide a

vehicles ferry berth on the Hong Kong side, if carried out in connection with the new provision for the passenger ferry services, is estimated at $250,000 making a total of $800,000 to provide a combined vehicles and passenger ferry pier.

16. On the Kowloon side the proposed vehicles wharf would be built at Jordan Road, thus releasing the present wharf

inside the typhoon shelter. The site chosen is convenient

and room can be found for a sufficient concourse area ( see

Plan B in Sessional Paper No.6 of 1928). It is specially suitable in view of the probable relief that would be afforded

to the very congested Kowloon Point by the removal therefrom

of all cross-harbour vehicles traffic. On this side

necessary reconstruction work has already been commenced on

the piers at Shamshuipo and Mongkok tsui. The Yaurati ferry

pier, at present in use inside the shelter is unsuitable and

requires to be reinforced and enlarged at a cost estimated at

$110,000, if it is to continue in use as a ferry pier.

scheme proposed for a vehicles ferry will, however, combine

the ferry traffic of this pier with the traffic at the proposed vehicles pier at the end of Jordan Road just outside

the shelter. The cost of the proposed vehicles ferry pier

is estimated at $500,000, and the construction of this pier would make it possible to use for public purposes the pier inside the shelter without incurring any additional expenditure.
