arrival of the new Governor.
This decision was
supported by all the Unofficial Members and all
the Officials except 2.
An outline of the proposed re-organisation
of the existing piers and services for the
purpose of accommodating the new service is given in the despatch paragraphs 14 etc. In any
£41,230 case, an immediate expenditure of about $550,000
would be required for the re-construction and
improvement of the existing ferry system even if the proposed new venicular ferry berth is not to be
substituted for it. The cost of the additional
construction necessary if it were substituted,
£10.750
is estimated at $250,000 making a total of
#60,000
$800,000-for the work on the Island. On the
Kowloon (mainland)side re-construction work has
already been begun at two terminal points (Shamshuipo and Mongkokt sui). At another major terminal point
£8250 (Youmati) an immediate expenditure of $110,000
is required if it is to continue to be used as a
ferry pier. The cost of the proposed vehicular
£37,500 ferry pier is estimated at $500,000, which would release for public purposes the existing pier without incurring any additional expenditure.
The additional expenditure therefore of 48000 adopting the new plans would amount to $640,000,
ZHG500
viz., $660,000 necessary for renewals and re-
construction,on a basis of the existing system
£97,500
as against 300,000 on the basis of the proposed re-organisation. The 0.A. G. has no reason to
doubt that the ferries whether conducted by
Government or leased to companies will produce
ample revenue to pay interest and sinking fund on
the capital expenditure, and in his opinion, it
