CELED TRUE CAay

6th September 1928.
Dear Commander Hole,
We have interviewed further candidates
this morning at the Board of Trade Offices, for the
outstanding vacancy for an Assistant Marine Surveyor
(Engine). The best candidate in so far as all
qualifications are concerned, is a Mr. Ashworth, who,
however, is over 35 years of age (date of birth being
9th December 1892), and is married with one young
child. I explained to him the possibility of his not
being eligible for pension, but he decided to take
the risk. He wants to take his wife and child out
with him after completing his course at home with the
Board of Trade.
The other candidate, Mr. Forrest, is 29 years
of age and single. As you will see from the attached
copy of my notes of the interview, Mr. Forrest would
have been considered good enough, but Mr. Ashworth is
better.
In view of what you told me the last time I
saw you about endeavouring to get a younger man, I am
not definitely offering the appointment to Ashworth
until I hear further from You. Both Mr. Baker and
Mr. Laslett of the Board of Trade, however, consider
that he would be a success in this appointment.
I hope you are continuing to enjoy your
leave, and shall be glad to hear in due course whether
you have decided to spend the end of it on the
Continent. The Board of Trade people asked me to tell
you that they will be pleased to see you again before
you return.
Commander G. F. Hole, R.N.

Yours sincerely,
