Mr. Ashworth's statement that he had
an interview with Captain Pearson is incorrect as
the latter did not deal with these appointments and
none of the candidates was interviewed by him. The
only interview of which we have any record was on the
occasion when Messrs. Laslett and Baker, Chief
Engineer Surveyor and Assistant Secretary, respectively
of the Board of Trade and I met at the Board's Office
on 6th September, 1928, to make a final selection
Commander Hole was unavoidably
of candidates.
prevented from attending.
The question of time spent on the
course of training counting for service and pension
was not raised in so far as our record of the
interview shews, but I did inform Mr. Ashworth that
there was a possibility of his not being eligible
for pension in consequence of his age, and Mr.
Ashworth accepted this possibility and was prepared
to take the risk, vide the enclosed copy of my letter
to Commander Hole dated 6.9.28.
Mr. Ashworth's contention in the
matter appears to be definitely negatived by the
first clause of the form of course of instruction.
agreement (copy attached) which Mr. Ashworth signed
and which stipulates that the ultimate engagement
for the appointment is conditional on his undergoing
the course of training in question.
