the non-arrival of essential fittings, work on the actual
laying of the pipe could not begin until the 17th of
December.
4.
The time estimated for laying the pipe
line sufficiently to allow of water being brought across
the harbour was three months and thus the work should have
been completed by the end of January, 1930.
5.
The first pipe was laid by the Contractors
on the 17th of December, 1929, and the whole of the submarine pipes was laid by the 17th of February, 1930 a period of fifty-seven working days excluding holidays
at Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year.
6.
The pipe line was tested after each joint
on the harbour bed was made and the final pressure test
was very satisfactory.
7.
The connections between the submarine and
land pipes at the Kowloon and Hong Kong ends were completed
on the 23rd of February and from that date to the 31st of
March anchor blocks, piles, major protective measures and
general testing of the pipe line were carried out.
&.
Although the pipe line is now in operation, work of a protective nature along the harbour bed is being
carried out and the pipe is being kept under close
observation before it is finally handed over to the
Maintenance Department.
9.
The estimated cost was $300,000 and the
final actual cost will be approximately $260,000.
10.
During the tests in the month of March
13.30 million gallons of water passed through the pipe line and during April a further 69.88 million gallons.
11.
I desire to record my appreciation of the excellent work performed by the Engineers concerned
