An Officer who with the permission of the Colonial Secretary, does not reside either in Government quarters or in a tenement in respect of which a rent allowance is payable as above, receives a lodging allowance as follows:-

(a) Married Officers 15% of salary

subject to a maximum of $100 per

mensem.

(b) Other Officers 71% of salary

subject to a maximum of $50 per mensem

First Class Passage will be provided in accordance with Colonial Regulation No. 111.

Period of engage- ment.

Conversion of salary into local currency. Contributions to Provident Fund.

The Officer will be engaged on a probat- ionary agreement for a period of three years at the end of which he will, if his services are still satisfactory, and subject to his being certified medically fit, be placed on the permanent establishment, and come under the leave arrangements pertaining thereto.

For purposes of payments in the Colony sterling salaries are at present converted into dollars in accordance with a sliding scale of $10 to the pound when the dollar is 4/4d. and over rising to $12 to the pound when the dollar is at or below 2/6a. In addition to this a strictly temporary allowance of 2% or 1% according as an Officer is married or unmarried is at present payable in respect of each penny that the value of the dollar is below 2/6d. up to a maximum of 18% (or 9%). The present value is about 1/6d. This system of conversion may be altered as a result of the recommendations of the Salaries Commissioners, vide 2 supra, A deduction of 4% from salary is made as contribution to the Widows' and Orphans Pension Scheme.
