With reference to your letter of the 19th

June and your interview in the Colonial Office on the

14th July, I am directed by lord rassfield to inform

you that he has received a telegram from the Governor of

Hong Kong asking that the post of dental surgeon may

remain unfilled in view of the appointment locally of a

Committee to investigate the possibility of retrenchment

in various directions on account of the present

unfavourable financial si tuation in the Colony.

Accordingly the secretary of state regrets

that he is obliged to withdraw the offer made to you in

the letter from this Department of the 10th June.

in due course, however, the Government of Hong Kong

decides to proceed with the appointment, you will be

regarded, whether you may be in this country or

overseas at the time, as having a prior claim to the

offer.

I um to add that the arrangements for study

leave, etc., contemplated when you left the Falkland
