HONGKONG,

The Hon. Director of Public Works, Public Works Department, HONGKONG.

5th July, 1929.

Sir,

60

We have the honour to refer to the further test which you have been kind enough to arrange for us, and now beg to inform you that this trial was carried out with the COLFIX Cold Surfacing Emulsion on a part of Connaught Road from the junction of Central street rumming Cast for a distance of 156 ft. 6 ins. with a mean width of slightly over 34 ft. 8 ins., giving a total area of 603 sq. yards.

Owing to the very onerous nature of this trial and considering that the said road is one which carries a very heavy amount of traffic, we decided to use the COLFIX GROUT and the amount used was 4 drums each containing 40 British Imperial Gallons, i.e. a total of 160 gallons, which, on the area mentioned gives a covering area of 3.77 sq. yards per gallon, and which result we think you will agree is very reasonable indeed.

Our present price of COLFIX GROUT is HK30.37 per gallon in drums or barrels, our option, delivered to site in Hongkong and/or to your Middle Road Depot, Kowloon, it being understood that empty drums or barrels will be invoiced up to you at cost, i.e. $4.- each and credited to you in full on their return, the expense of collection of the empty containers being for our account.

We would just like to put on record that our reason for using GROUT in this instance as compared with 3PRAY, which was used in previous tests, is entirely on account of the fact that through experience we have found for a road bearing such heavy traffic as Connaught Road, GROUT is the better of the two emulsions, but in case there may be any doubt in your mind as regards the comparison in price of the two articles, we would draw your attention to the fact that GKOUT is only two cents more per gallon than SPRAY.

It has been pointed out to you in recent testimonials that COLFIX has proven itself to stand up in an excellent manner to heavy traffic roads, as witness the High Barnet Road in London, but we are somewhat of the opinion that in Connaught Road where there is such heavy traffic with hand trucks and other vehicles which very severely abuse the road surface, it may be found that a reinforced Bitumen road is an ideal one, but in such a case might we draw your attention to the exorbitant expense which such a road surface would entail, and consequently, therefore, we would like in due course to discuss with you the competitive costs per square yard of Hot Asphalt as compared with the Cold Emulsion.

30 far as we can ascertain at the moment, our present price of COLFIX SPRAY and GROUT, taking into account the fact that no extra expense in laying a Cold Emulsion is involved, as compared with the handling of Hot Asphalt, you will find that the laid cost to you through using our material will be equally as economical, if not less than the method which has previously been in force in this Colony.
