The Club has thus no option, but to proceed as soon as possible with the preparation of a new Club House to take the place of the existing premises.

The Club commenced with a membership of 110 members.

It was originally a "Cricket Club". At the present time it has a membership of 250 members. In addition to the

regular Cricket Elevens, it includes Lawn Bowls and Tennis. Owing to the growth of the community, the Club is now used by the wives and families of members.

ladies has for some time been provided in a matshed in the Club grounds. The need of the Club, therefore, now exists for larger premises than those in use.

Accommodation for

Civil Servants, in the service of the Colonial

Government, are alone eligible for membership. The Club is open to civil servants of all departments and grades, subject to election by ballot. A limited number of

subscribers" are admitted (the number being proportionate

to the number of members), who on admission exercise all the privileges of membership. A principal object of this provision in the constitution of the Club is to include civilian employees in the Royal Naval Yard.

In addition to the site plan, I enclose also a sketch plan prepared by a member of the Club, showing the character of the proposal. The estimated cost of the erection and equipment of this proposed building is $20,000, of which sum the Club is able to furnish one half. Without the assistance of the Government, this undertaking cannot be proceeded with. The resources of the members of the Club cannot alone satisfactorily meet its present requirement.

The project in itself is not over-ambitious. No attempt is being made to establish in the Happy Valley

a fully equipped social club. The new building will possess the character of a pavilion.

I understand that no objection is likely to be raised
