TELEGRAM from the Governor of Hong Kong to the Secretary of
State for the Colonies.
Dated 24 January, 1931. Received 7.25 a.m. 24 January, 1931.
No.21.Confidential. Your telegram of the 19th January
Confidential No.14. Sterling salaries conversion.
A petition signed by 471 officers has been received asking
that action may be stayed pending forwarding of a memorial
on the subject. I cannot agree that this is desirable and
January salaries have already been reckoned on now basis. It is submitted that cases of genuine hardship on account of educating children in the United Kingdom might be met by allowing remittances under Colonial Regulation 299 and applying new scale for the balance drawn locally. I propose to act on your telegram pending receipt of memorial and your considera- tion of it.
