In reply to Sir M. Lampson's enquiry, Messrs. Procter

and Bahnson said that while they were working together, the

American Cable Company was keeping in close touch with them

in its negotiations. The Japanese, on the other hand, (whose

only interest was in the Nagasaki cable) were waiting on

events, probably with a view to claiming the same terms

which the Cable Companies might secure.
