which, in the interests of British influence and British
trade in the Far East, the British Empire cannot afford to
dispense, and will take this opportunity of helping the
institution as such, the whole outlook of the University
will change. By this same act of generosity His Majesty's
Ministers can proclaim to the world their unwavering
confidence in British educational methods and ideals, and
their determination to leave undone nothing which is
calculated to contribute to the reconstruction of China.
I venture to plead most earnestly that the
sum of one million pounds sterling should be granted from
the Boxer Indemnity fund as an endowment to the University
of Hong Kong.
