ON THE WORKING OF

THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG

FOR 1928.

THE CHANCELLOR AND THE PRO-CHANCELLOR,

His Excellency the Chancellor was away on leave during the greater part of the year under review. The Hon. Mr. W. T. Southorn, C.M.C., who administered the Government of Hong Kong during the Governor's absence, acted, in accordance with the terms of the University Ordinance, as Pro-Chancellor of the University. The University is grateful to Mr. Southorn for the kindly interest which he has always taken in it. As Pro-Chancellor he did everything that he could to help the University.

RICCI HALL.

On the 13th November, 1928, the Pro-Chancellor laid the foundation stone of a new hostel to be known as Ricci Hall. The hostel, which will be an attached one, will be under the control of the Irish Jesuit Fathers. The building is being put up on an excellent site on the Pokfulum Road, where the Fly Point Battery once stood. The site, which is open to all the winds of heaven and overlooks the western entrance to the har- bour, has been leased by the University to the Jesuit Fathers at a nominal rent. The fact that the Irish Jesuit Fathers who recently came to South China on a special educational mission, have elected to throw in their lot with the University, is a good augury.

MATRICULATION AND LOCAL EXAMINATIONS.

The Matriculation and the local examinations of the University are attracting an increasing number of candidates. This is, to a considerable extent, due to the greater number of boys and girls who are now being educated in English and Anglo-Chinese schools in Hong Kong, The fact that the Education Department of the Colony makes it obligatory on all
